Alcohol and Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids Alcohol - How Does Alcohol Affect Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids occur when the veins in lower rectum and around anus get swollen and inflamed. This causes pain and itching around the affected area that are usually tolerable.

Hemorrhoids are caused by a number of factors including constipation, poor diet and lifestyle, diarrhea, and sitting on the toilet for too long. Poor lifestyle includes consumption of alcohol but it does not have a direct link to the condition.

However, alcohol does have a link to hemorrhoids especially when consumed in large amounts. What does alcohol have to do with hemorrhoids? It irritates the existing hemorrhoids and makes them worse. This article discusses how alcohol affects hemorrhoids, how hemorrhoids can be prevented, and more.

Alcohol and Hemorrhoids

Although hemorrhoids are not life threatening, the pain and discomfort caused by them can lead to extreme level of stress and exhaustion. Alcohol affects hemorrhoids in a number of ways.

These are the following:

  1. Alcohol makes constipation even worse because it dehydrates the body by reducing the water in the cells. We learned that constipation is a major cause of hemorrhoids because hard stools increase the pressure around the rectal area and anal veins.
  2. Alcohol, especially is large amounts, lowers the resistance and immunity of the body.
  3. Wine, beer, and other drinks with spirits relax the wall of the blood vessels, encourage the gastrointestinal mucosa as well as increase congestion and venous stasis.
  4. People who drink too much alcohol have diets that are different from normal. Poor diet leads to constipation and other undesirable health conditions.

Hemorrhoids do not feel worse while being drunk because alcohol tends to cover up the pain and discomfort. However, once alcohol is no longer in the body system, the symptoms are aggravated.

They are more typified by pain and prolapse. Some alcohol drinkers feel good and the pain caused by hemorrhoids is reduced. However, when the next day comes, the hemorrhoids begin to protrude and cause intense and excruciating pain.

How to prevent hemorrhoids?

If an alcoholic does not want to suffer from hemorrhoids anymore, there are ways to relieve hemorrhoids symptoms. However, preventing or treating hemorrhoids needs self-discipline and dedication to give up alcohol and have a healthy lifestyle.

  1. Eat more fruits and veggies to provide more nutrients to the body and to add more bulk to the stool. Avoid foods that can make stool hard or cause constipation such as spicy food, fried food or meat.
  2. Eat foods that are rich in fiber. Fiber aids in healthy digestive system and easy bowel movement. Fiber-rich foods include whole wheat bread, brown rice, barley, legumes, oats, and lentils.
  3. Increase water consumption and reduce the intake of coffee, strong tea, alcohol, and any other liquids that can irritate the anal canal.
  4. Increase physical activities such as exercising, biking, and other aerobic activities.
  5. To relieve pain caused by hemorrhoids, apply over-the-counter ointments or gels. However, these medications may cause side effects.
  6. To relieve pain using natural home remedies, prepare a warm tub of water. Sit in it everyday for about 10 to 15 minutes. This relaxes the swollen nerves and relieves the pain in the rectal area.
  7. In some cases, hemorrhoids get worse and can no longer be treated by home remedies. The doctor might recommend medical procedure such as rubber band ligation. This procedure cuts off the blood flow to hemorrhoids, forcing them to shrink. This procedure should be done by medical experts.

In some cases, a chemical is injected into the blood vessels. This chemical helps decrease the size of hemorrhoids.
