Stages Of Hemorrhoids

Stages Of Hemorrhoids

People usually do not talk openly about hemorrhoids. Suffering from hemorrhoids is embarrassing. They are characterized by swelling of the area around the anus.

This condition is painful and uncomfortable but often tolerable. In some cases, hemorrhoids get worse and show signs of a more serious medical condition. In this article, we will talk about this embarrassing topic including the causes, symptoms, treatments, and stages of hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids are caused by constipation, prolonged sitting on the toilet bowl, lack of exercise, poor diet, and pregnancy. Around fifty percent of adults experience hemorrhoids but only 4 percent of them actually consult a doctor for this condition. In the United States and Europe, 75 percent of adults suffer from hemorrhoids at some point in their lives.

Stages of hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids can be internal or external depending on the stage. There are four stages of hemorrhoids and each stage is characterized by the following:

Grade 1

Hemorrhoids start at grade 1 and grow inside. They are located above the anal cavity or pectinate line. At this stage, the patient suffers mild itching and discomfort.

Grade 2

In grade 2 stage of hemorrhoids, the tissues begin to collapse and weaken which makes the hemorrhoids slip out the canal. Hemorrhoids start to prolapse and are reversible at this stage. They are typically painful and irritating.

Grade 3

Grade 3 hemorrhoids are also prolapsed but not reversible. They can’t be pushed back inside unlike the Grade 2 hemorrhoids. This is very painful and causes too much discomfort.

Grade 4

The worst stage is the Grade 4 hemorrhoids. They hang outside the rectal area and they are excruciatingly painful and prone to infection and bleeding.

After knowing the stage of the hemorrhoids, proper treatment should be determined and applied. Apart from the stages of hemorrhoids, this article also identifies four types of hemorrhoids.

Types of hemorrhoids

The types of hemorrhoids are distinguished by varying levels of pain and discomfort. Each type can also determine the stage of hemorrhoids. Here are the major types of hemorrhoids:

Internal hemorrhoids

These occur inside the rectal area where the veins experience heavy pressure because of hard stool or inability to defecate. It is characterized by presence of blood in stool or tissue paper. It is painful. Internal hemorrhoids may get worse when they prolapse or slip down the rectal area.

External hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are already prolapsed down the anal cavity. They cause burning sensation that is very painful and discomforting. They cause bleeding as well. External hemorrhoids can be prolapsed or thrombosed.

Prolapsed hemorrhoids

Prolapsed hemorrhoids occur when the internal hemorrhoids become weak and slip down the anal cavity.

Thrombosed hemorrhoids

Thrombosed hemorrhoids are external hemorrhoids that have formed blood clots. This happens when hemorrhoidal veins become inflamed and the supply of blood is cut off.

This causes them to be detached and they form blood clots. Thrombosed hemorrhoids are extremely painful and need surgery for treatment.

Another effective treatment for hemorrhoids is change of diet. Increase your fiber intake and consume at least eight glasses of water everyday.

The foods that are rich in fiber include whole grain bread, vegetables, fruits, lentils, legumes, and brown rice. Foods rich in healthy, unsaturated fatty acids and herbal medicines are also good for preventing hemorrhoids.

Avoid foods rich in oil, processed foods, too much meat, dairy products and spicy foods as they can cause indigestion and constipation.

Another effective yet natural treatment is massage. Have someone massage your lower back, bottom, and legs to get the blood in healthy circulation. Healthy blood circulation not only relaxes you and makes you feel more energized, but also helps eliminate pressure and pain.

The above-mentioned natural treatments are ideal and good for all stages of hemorrhoids. Grade 1 stage of hemorrhoids may only cause tolerable pain and discomfort. However, it does not mean that you should ignore it.

If you feel even a little discomfort in your rectal area, be more conscious about your diet and lifestyle. It is more effective to prevent something that is still at the first stage than treating it when it gets worse.

Hemorrhoids are embarrassing and you do not want them to become worse.
